‘Planning a History Curriculum to ensure Continuity and Progression EYFS – Year 6’



This day will focus on the key issue of improving pupil outcomes in History through building a rigorous curriculum with both continuity and progression. The programme will be practical and interactive. During the day colleagues will review and then take away a number of fully documented and resourced enquiries written to the National Curriculum. These can be trialled with pupils and also used as models of good practice in their leadership of History in school.



Key Objectives: all colleagues will leave:

  • Knowing what it means for pupils to make progress in History EYFS-Year 6; 
  • Understanding how to design enquiries which focus on achieving steadily more challenging subject outcomes; 
  • Having trialled and evaluated a number of historical enquiries EYFS – Year 6 which exemplify progression; 
  • Confident to lead colleagues in improving provision and outcomes in History in their schools.

Course Description

The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a successful approach that uses pictures to develop communication skills. It is appropriate for children and adults with a wide range of learning and communication difficulties including autism. Easy to access, affordable to implement and scientifically supported as one of the most effective communication interventions, PECS is an opportunity to open the door to spontaneous communication.

Course Objectives:

  • everything you need to know to begin successfully implementing PECS
  • the theoretical background, including how to develop effective educational environments
  • a review of visual strategies useful for communication
  • the six phases of PECS, where to start and when to move on
  • strategies for motivating your learner to communicate
  • how to move from a single picture exchange to sentences
  • how to teach picture discrimination with two or more pictures
